A Manufacturing Problem: Solved
Client Request: Client requested technical problem solving at an international customer plant. The plant was experiencing a beverage flavor problem at its bottling plant with no apparent cause other than suspected ingredient problems in the diet beverage.
CLB Resolution
A trip to the plant revealed no obvious problems with ingredients or equipment. Samples of the product were taken for examination.
- CLB suspected microbiological problems, although sample tests indicated no micro counts.
- CLB examined the flavor and the beverage, finding slight sediment in the samples. The sediment contained inactive microbial cells, indicating a filling sugar contamination problem. When the nutrient sugar was reduced, the microbes consumed part of the flavor, causing the flavor imbalance.
- The customer was pleased with the resolution by CLB, and the client’s ingredients business was retained.
